4 Common Things Not to Do in an Interview
Job interviews are stressful, and people make mistakes under pressure… but these four mistakes can cost you the job.
1: Never Admit Desperation
You may think it shows your willingness to do whatever it takes, but this is a definite red flag. It’s a sign you’ve been turned down for other positions or simply aren’t as attractive a candidate as they think.
Even if you do get the job, it will be a lot harder to negotiate salary. Where else are you going to go?
2: Don’t Trash Your Previous Job
If you’re asked about your past employment, why you left last job, or why you were fired, always paint the best possible picture of your relationship.
There may be some old wounds and fresh insults, but don’t let it hurt your chances. Even if your last job was a nightmare, find something positive to say.
3: Don’t Overshare
TMI is too much.
In a job interview, you need to keep it professional. No matter how comfortable you get with your interviewer, you’re not friends. Your personal life and relationship status are completely irrelevant.
Don’t be cold, but stay general, positive, and professional.
4: Avoid Filler Phrases
We all have a word or phrase we use to fill the silences while considering what to say next. In moderation, no one will notice — if you bracket every clause with ‘like’, ‘um’, and ‘you know’, you will come across as inarticulate and nervous.
Take a second and put your thoughts in order. You’ll make a much better impression that way.
