EDUCATION
MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
Cambridge, MA
Master of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering / GPA: 4.8/5.0 September 2012
•Focus: Structural Systems and Sustainability
•Thesis Title: Unprocessed Rice Husk Ash as a Partial Replacement of Cement for Low-Cost Concrete

MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
Cambridge, MA
Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering / GPA: 4.2/5.0
June 2010
•Relevant Coursework: Mechanics of Structures and Soils, Concrete Design, Steel Design

WORK EXPERIENCE
MASTER’S THESIS RESEARCH
Cambridge, MA
January – August 2012
•Investigated the viability of using unprocessed, unground rice husk ash (RHA) as a partial cement substitute for construction in rural Cambodia
•Conducted compressive strength tests of RHA-cement mortars incorporating 5 different RHAs from Cambodia in 0-30% replacements of Portland cement by mass
•While the RHA-cement mortars had a lower compressive strength than the control (0% RHA), it was deemed suitable for making concrete pillars used in Cambodian housing construction.

CONCRETE SUSTAINABILITY HUB, MIT Cambridge, MA
Research Assistant Summer 2011
•Designed 4-storey wood-framed multi-family building for comparative life cycle assessment with an insulated concrete form building of equivalent internal space requirements
•Determined energy use of single family and commercial building models by using EnergyPlus energy simulation software
•Compared simulated life cycle building energy use and global warming potential results to actual and published values to benchmark study results

DESIGN WORKSHOP FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE, MIT Cambodia
Student January 2011
•Conducted tests with rice husk ash (RHA) concrete to determine material strength and discovered a type of RHA that when used to replace a certain percentage of cement, can produce concrete with greater 7-day compressive strength than that made without ash replacement
•Built low-cost lavatory for school using soil bricks and RHA-cement mortar and concrete as a demonstration structure
